Gwinllan Rondo 2018 has developed into our best vintage so far with beautiful blackberry aromas, notes of vanilla and oak. Rondo is currently the only Red Wine in the range and has been aged for 12 months in one year old French Oak Barrels. Similar in style to a Malbec.

Rondo is a dark-skinned grape variety, used for making red and rosé wine. It is a hybrid grape, created in 1964 by Professor Vilém Kraus in then-Czechoslovakia by crossing the varieties Zarya Severa and St. Laurent. Dr. Helmut Becker (1927-1990) of the Geisenheim Grape Breeding Institute conducted further work on it, which explains why the grape is known under a Geisenheim designation. It has been protected since 1997, when it was first planted commercially by Thomas Walk Vineyard in Ireland under the name Amurensis Walk; it became Rondo in 1999.
Rondo is an early ripening variety which possesses high resistance against frost and downy mildew. However it may be necessary to give annual treatments against powdery mildew in some vineyards. Rondo produces a ruby-red wine and is cultivated in many locations in northern Europe where dark-skinned traditional varieties struggle to ripen and produce quality fruit. Rondo grows exceptionally well here in North Wales and can also be found in many locations in northern Europe including Denmark, England, Ireland, the Netherlands and Sweden.
Gwinllan Conwy is an award winning vineyard, producing Welsh still and sparkling wines made using the traditional method. The delicious wines have been recognised on both a national and international level, winning many awards along the way. It was thier passion for winet hat inspired planting the vineyard in 2012. Having no experience of growing vines, they planted just 300 to begin with and have expanded to 3000 vines over 3 acres, learning valuable lessons along the way.
