Tasting notes: Molinillo Malbec

Molinillo Malbec has a bright, lifted nose with freshly picked black berry fruits and expressive violet notes.

The pallet is juicy, but balanced. Ripe berry fruits are abundant, whilst gentle spice adds dimension. It’s weighty with soft, gentle tannins. And an enduring fruit charged finish.

Boutinot’s partnership with the Caselles family has seen them source this wine from low yielding vineyards in Mendoza’s Agrelo region. This is Malbec for purists. 1,000 metre plus altitude helps the variety ripens slowly and therefore ensures the grapes alluring aromatics are preserved.

This is crafted with respect for the wonderful fruit they have sourced. Gentle extraction techniques are used to capture the juicy vibrant red and blackcurrant fruits.  These are the hallmarks of this variety. However, care is also taken to preserve the violet scent which can make Malbec oh so pretty.

Boutinot has been working with growers in Argentina for over 15 years. Constantly sourcing the best value from vintage to vintage. Winemaker Eric Monnin has been working tirelessly over the last few years. Securing the best long term contracts. For these important wines are sourced from specific old vine estates in Mendoza.

Recent vintages have really started to show the results of this long-term vision with regards to quality and value.

Malbec is a purple grape variety used in making red wine. However, the grapes tend to have an inky dark colour and robust tannins. They are known as one of the six grapes allowed in the blend of red Bordeaux wine.

In France, plantations of Malbec are now found primarily in Cahors in South West France. Although the grape is grown worldwide. It is increasingly celebrated as an Argentine varietal.
