Producer & Region:
Gwinllan is an award winning vineyard, located in Conwy, with a stunning backdrop of the Snowdonia Mountain Range. Producing Welsh still and sparkling wines made using the traditional method. The delicious wines have been recognised on both a national and international level, winning many awards along the way.
It was their passion for wine that inspired planting the vineyard in 2012. Having no experience of growing vines, they planted just 300 to begin with and have expanded to 3000 vines over 3 acres, learning valuable lessons along the way. Initially the wines were made using cool climate varieties however, due to our exceptional weather, they decided to plant some traditional varieties such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Colin and Charlotte Bennett have learnt a great deal about wine-making working closely with the winery and their wines have developed over the years, as they have improved their growing techniques. They are very proud to say that there wines have received much recognition winning awards, even from the very first vintage. There is however, always much to learn, both in the vineyard and the winery which they will continue to embrace to bring you the very best Welsh wines.
Ortega is a grape variety used for white wine. It is a cross between Müller-Thurgau and Siegerrebe. Ortega ripens early, is not sensitive to frost and reaches quite high must weights, typically 20 degrees Oechsle higher than Müller-Thurgau. It is therefore often used for sweet wines, which are considered to improve with cellaring.
Phoenix is a white variety of grape of German origin used for wine. A cross between Vitis vinifera variety Bacchus and hybrid grape Villard Blanc.
