Producer & Region: Gwinllan Pefriog

Gwinllan Conwy is an award winning vineyard, located in Conwy, with a stunning backdrop of the Snowdonia Mountain Range. Producing Welsh still and sparkling wines made using the traditional method. Their delicious wines have been recognised on both a national and international level, winning many awards along the way. It was their passion for wine that inspired planting the vineyard in 2012.  Having no experience of growing vines, they planted just 300 to begin with. And have expanded to 3000 vines over 3 acres, learning valuable lessons along the way.

Initially the wines were made using cool climate varieties however, due to our exceptional weather. They decided to plant some traditional varieties such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.  Together, they have learnt a great deal about wine-making working closely with the winery and their wines have developed over the years, as they have improved their growing techniques. They are very proud to say that there wines have received much recognition winning awards, even from the very first vintage. There is however, always much to learn, both in the vineyard and the winery which they will continue to embrace to bring you the very best Welsh wines.

Vinification:

This sparkling wine is made using ‘méthode traditionnelle’. The base wine is put in bottles along with yeast and a small amount of sugar, called the ‘liqueur de tirage’. It is then, stopped with a crown cap  and stored in a wine cellar horizontally for a secondary fermentation. The wine is then riddled using mechanised equipment called a gyropallette.

Solaris wines are most often made in off-dry styles. But the variety’s extremely high natural sugar levels make it well suited to the production of sweet wines in hotter climates.  It is disease resistant, and ripens earlier than almost any other wine grape. The name Solaris, which means “sun”, is particularly apt, as the variety is used in regions noted for their cool climates and low sunshine levels.  Solaris grapes produce high must weights and early-ripening fruit. An excellent combination for growers looking to ensure an abundant harvest.
