Producer Region:
In 1918, a few months before the Armistice, Manoel Domingues Poças Júnior, who had been born in the heart of the Port Wine hustle and bustle, decided to establish his own company. Manoel Poças was 30 years old and he had some experience in this business. With his uncle, he created a company to sell grape spirits to large Port Wine shippers. Soon afterwards he opened a head office in Vila Nova de Gaia, where they remain to this day. Today, with three quintas in the best winemaking areas of the Douro Demarcated Region, Poças ensures its total control over the quality of its wines and the family is more involved than ever before.
Jorge Manuel Pintão has headed Poças’ Winemaking and Quality team since 1987. Trained in chemistry and with a Master’s in Oenology from the Institut d’Oenologie de Bordeaux, he served an apprenticeship at the renowned Château Giscours in the Medoc region of Bordeaux. The fruits of his art have been frequently rewarded at international wine competitions such as the “Fortified Winemaker of the Year” prize from the 2001 International Wine Challenge. Wine and chocolate, wine and preserves… he will accept all challenges.
Maria Manuel Maia is in charge of all the Poças wine estates. Graduated in Agricultural Engineering by the Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, in 2005 she became responsible for all the firm’s viticulture, with special note of the replanting of 13 ha of vineyards at the Vale de Cavalos quinta. She believes that the Douro vineyards, due to the diversity of the varieties of vines with which they are planted, greatly contribute to ensuring the unique nature of the wines they produce.
