Tasting notes: Walter Bressia Sylvestra Malbec
The Walter Bressia Sylvestra Malbec seeks a much brighter fruit expression. Very largely unoaked, this is 25 year old vine Malbec from the Agrelo district of Mendoza. The wine is hugely aromatic with violet notes. The violet characters follow through to a fine, cedary palate with bags of
soft bramble and red cherry fruit.
Food Match: Walter Bressia Sylvestra Malbec
Works well with a big, juicy steak, churrasco de chorizo marinated with garlic, parsley and olive oil, grilled vegetables with chimichurri sauce.
Region/Producer
100% from vineyards at 940 metres in Agrelo – Luján de Cuyo – Mendoza.
There’s something very special going on down a dusty track in one of the farther-flung out posts of Mendoza. A winemaker for years (‘for other people…’ as he puts it), Walter Bressia has spent decades quietly accruing relationships with growers and has emerged with an eclectic portfolio from six sites that, he believes, represents the very best of the region.
Walter Bressia and son Walter Jnr, are crafting their own very compelling expressions of the region and these are intensely personal wines. There’s a kind of secrecy to their source, you can visit the vineyards and they are indeed impressive, gnarly old things, beautifully tended, but there is alchemy back at the bodega. Walter’s fabulous finds have been spun into wines of depth and character. Production isn’t huge but the quality and personality of the wines are.
